A Young Journalist’s Take On The BAFTAs

According to Anjola Fashawe, a reporter with Youth Journalism International, the 2023 British Academy of Film and Television Arts’s awards was overall disappointing and mostly humorous in the wrong places.

She noted that some moments during the ceremony were unintentionally funny, such as a performance by Ariana DeBose being so uncomfortable that the looks on the audience’s faces were apparently more funny than some of the hosts’ jokes. Fashawe also thought that certain awards were given to the wrong nominee, like Angela Bassett not getting Best Supporting Actress, but she did like that the award for rising star actor/actress was given to Emma Mackey. Fashawe criticized the quality of the ceremony, saying "For the award show to be in its 76th year, you would think it had good funding, but the theater space seemed low-budget and more like a replica of a school assembly hall."

To be honest, I did not watch the BAFTA ceremony this year, but when I looked at the list of winners, it did seem to be mostly focused on 4 movies in particular. I understand that this is quite common and what films win awards are not always based on the overall quality or artistry of a given movie, but rather deals with factors like what the judges’ personal tastes are and the amount of money spent campaigning for an award. However, I will not judge the quality of things that I have not seen, but it would have been nice to see awards going to many different projects.

  1. This is an interesting trend with award shows as of recent. Many of them are losing viewers and public opinion is crashing. It is just confusing how these shows have alienated the fans so much.
