Reporting the Truth: Nicole Luna's Interview with Patricia Campos Mello- A Critique
https://youthjournalism.org/facing-attacks-and-threats-from-brazils-president-she-kept-reporting/
The article is from an interview with Patricia Campos Mello from April 2023, and was conducted in advance of Mello giving the keynote speech at the annual Justice for Women lecture at the University of Maine School of Law on April 26. The reason that Mello is the keynote speaker at the event is due to her work in Brazil as a journalist, specifically her work about the former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and subsequent harassment against her and her family as a result of her work exposing the misinformation from the former president. Both Mello and the article's author Nicole Luna explain the unfortunate situation and talk about the effects that it has had on Mello, and talk about what Mello has done since then.
The article overall was well written and structured pretty well. The ratio of quotes to explanation makes sense for the interview format. To be honest, I am just sorry to hear that Mello's suits haven't been resolved yet and that the pain inflicted on her will probably not result in true justice. It is interesting to read about a female journalist's experiences and how she has continued to seek truth, in spite of difficult circumstances. Though I am not Brazilian, I know that the things that happened to her happen everywhere and that there is value in listening to others' stories, so this article was highly informative to me.
